Newly-ranked Butler narrowly edges UAB

12/30/2008 - Indianapolis, IN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Shelvin Mack scored 22 points, and the 25th-ranked Butler Bulldogs held on to defeat the UAB Blazers, 72-68, at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Matt Howard had 19 points, including 9-of-12 from the free throw line, for the Bulldogs (11-1), who were coming off an impressive road victory over then-14th ranked Xavier. Gordon Hayward posted eight points and nine rebounds in the win.

Robert Vaden had a game-high 23 points for the Blazers (8-5), who have lost two straight since a three-game winning streak. Paul Delaney tallied 19 points, while Lawrence Kinnard had 16 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

Down 11 at halftime, Butler got off to a quick start in the second half. The Bulldogs began the period on a 18-4 burst, as Howard's layup at the 14:47 mark gave the hosts a 45-42 lead.

After a Vaden three tied the game on UAB's next possession, Butler went on a 7-0 run, capped by Shawn Vanzant's three with 10:48 left.

But the Blazers used an 8-0 run to close to within 62-60 on Vaden's layup with 5:10 to go, and his three-pointer just over a minute later cut the Bulldogs' lead to 64-63.

Howard made a layup with 1:11 left to give Butler a three-point lead, and Howard swiped the ball on UAB's next possession and was fouled with 31 seconds left. He hit both free throws to put the Bulldogs up 68-63.

Kinnard missed a jumper for UAB with 26 seconds left, and Butler made its free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

With Butler leading 19-15 near the midway point of the first half, UAB embarked on an 11-0 run to seize a seven-point cushion.

Delaney, Channing Toney and Vaden each hit three-pointers, as Vaden's basket gave the Blazers a 26-19 edge with just under eight minutes left.

Butler responded to pull to within two on Mack's layup, but UAB outscored the Bulldogs, 12-3, for the rest of the half to take a 38-27 lead.

Game Notes

The all-time series is now tied, 1-1, with UAB taking the only other meeting between the schools in the 1980-81 season...Butler shot 47.6 percent (20-of- 42) from the field, while UAB shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58)...The Bulldogs went 22-of-31 from the free throw line, while UAB went 7-for-7.
